When I first joined deviantArt the user name I chose was T-Hip after the group The Tragically Hip. They have been in the news lately although it was for a sad reason. Their lead singer Gord Downie, who is known as the unofficial poet laureate of Canada, was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Downie and the group wanted to do one more tour, a limited 15 date one across Canada. The shows sold out very quickly causing some discussion about how scalpers are getting access to too many concert tickets and selling them at a premium on other sites. It had been suggested that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation show the final concert, from their hometown of Kingston, Ontario and sure enough the band and the CBC managed to work that out. It took place Saturday night, August 20 and one third of all Canadians tuned in to see the concert. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was there in person.
I was lucky enough to see the second last concert, in Ottawa on August 18. I blew the dust off my old point and shoot with the good zoom and managed to get some pics. I think it is fitting for me to post this picture now to honor the group that has meant so much to me, and to all Canadians, and as a nod to my original username back in the days when I spent a lot of time here at dA. During the first set they were huddled close together allowing me to get them all in one shot under the neat low lighting.
Here is a video that details the history of the band, and what they mean to Canadians, it is very interesting.
